Honoring the Summer Solstice: A Return to Radiance
Each year, around June 21st, the Earth reaches a point in her great turning when the Sun lingers longest in the sky. This is the Summer Solstice, or Litha in the Celtic wheel - a moment of radiant fullness and sacred stillness. The word "solstice" comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning "Sun standing still," and that's exactly how it feels: as though the world pauses to soak in the light. As we step into this seasonal gateway, we can feel a gentle invitation not only to celebrate the Sun outside, but to honour the light within.
In many ancient traditions, the Solstice was a time of fire and fertility, of dancing beneath the stars, and of deep reverence for the Earth’s abundance. Bonfires were lit on hilltops, sacred herbs were gathered at their peak potency, and people would leap through flames to bless their health and hopes. In the Celtic view, this was the height of the Oak King's reign - the embodiment of solar power, strength, and creative energy. Yet even in this crescendo of light, there was the quiet knowing: from here on, the days begin to shorten. Light reaches its peak, and then begins to return inward.
And so, the Solstice holds a beautiful paradox: it’s both a celebration and a turning point. A culmination, and a letting go.
This Year´s Astrology
This year, the Solstice arrives on June 21, 2025, with the Sun entering Cancer, a water sign ruled by the Moon. Cancer reminds us that even in brightness, tenderness matters. It’s not just about shining - it’s about coming home to the places and people that make us feel safe, known, and nurtured. This is a deeply emotional season, one that invites us to soften into intimacy with ourselves.
The Moon is in Taurus, a grounding earth sign, encouraging a slower pace and a reconnection to the body and the senses. It’s an invitation to root down, to honor the simple, sensual things: a warm cup of tea, bare feet on the soil, the scent of herbs in the air. Or use your favourite oils to slow down, and gently soften into your body & senses.
There’s also a gentle yet empowering sextile between Mercury and Mars, supporting clear communication and the courage to speak from the heart. Meanwhile, a subtle tension from Venus to the Sun nudges us to reflect on our relationships - what feels in harmony, and what may be quietly calling for realignment.
Aligning with Solstice Energy
So how do we align with all this radiant, sacred energy?
We begin by slowing down.
The Solstice is not about striving. It’s about presence. It’s about recognizing the beauty in what is in what has already bloomed and borne fruit. It’s about honoring the growth we’ve nurtured so far this year and asking, gently: What now wants to be seen, celebrated, and shared?
It’s also a time to re-center. To stand still, like the Sun, and check in with the light within. Where am I offering my energy? What is asking to be warmed by my attention? And what parts of me need the courage to shine more freely?
Bio-Energetic Perfume Oils: Scent as Sacred Support
One of our favorite ways to deepen our Solstice practice is through our bio-energetic perfume oils - intentional blends of alchemical essences that act as both subtle energetic medicine and ritual companions. They work perfect for a Solstice bath (especially combined with our Luminessence Sea Salt), before and after a meditation, or for a quick realignment whenever you need it.
These oils are more than just fragrance - they’re vibrational tools that align body, mind, and spirit. They work with all of our energy centers (chakras) in the body. They interact with our energetic field, helping us align with our own emotions, so we can connect with our highest potential. During the Summer Solstice, I choose oils that reflect both the solar fire and the heartful depth of Cancer season. Here are a few I love to work with at this time:
SOL NIGREDO: Deeply earthy and stabilizing. Connects us to ancient wisdom and the rhythms of our roots. Dismantling old structures. Rebuilding a strong and solid foundation.
MYSTERIUM CONIUNCTIO: A heart-opener that invites softness, self-love, and emotional healing. Reveals the hidden mysteries of the heart. The merging of opposites. Brings balance and harmony.
ET ALCHEMIST: Stepping into your power. Radiate your inner sun. I am. Self-confidence and self-worth.
UNUS MUNDUS: For spiritual connection, protection, and sacred focus. Helps open the crown and third eye. Unity. As above, so below. Bridging heaven and earth.
A Simple Solstice Ritual with Perfume Oils
Here’s how I’ll be honoring the Solstice this year:
1. Create A Sacred Space
Begin by choosing a space where you can be in peace; a small altar, in the woods, a quiet place in your home or even make yourself a bonfire. I light a candle - gold or white if possible - and set out symbols of summer: sunflowers, shells, oak leaves - or whatever you feel like. Then I take a few breaths to arrive.
2. Anoint with Intention
I choose an oil or blend. I place a few drops on my fingertips and gently anoint:
- My third eye, for vision and inner light
- My heart center, for courage and love
- My solar plexus, for confidence and personal power.
As I do, I whisper:
“I honor the light within me. I trust what I’ve grown. I welcome the next unfolding.”
3. Sit in Stillness or Meditate
I visualize the golden Sun pouring light through the crown of my head, filling every cell with warmth, radiance, and clarity. Let the scent of the oil guide you deeper.
4. Reflect and Journal
- What am I celebrating in myself today?
- What truth wants to be expressed more fully?
- What will I carry forward as the light slowly begins to wane?
5. Close with Gratitude.
I blow out the candle (or allow the bonfire to burn out), thanking the Sun, the Earth, and the spirit of the season. I carry the scent with me throughout the day as a reminder: I am light. I am rooted. I am enough & exactly where I am supposed to be.
